Kayla Buell – Ambassador started the topic Keeping Track Of Our Christmas Shopping in the forum SUM180: Our story 7 years, 4 months ago
I’m usually a hot mess when it comes to Christmas shopping. In previous years I’d simply start buying all the things whenever I came across a good deal and as the holiday approached I would gather all the gifts I’d bought and start wrapping them up. This led to me TOTALLY overspending, not knowing whether or not gifts had been delivered, because…[Read more]

Kayla Buell – Ambassador started the topic State of the (financial) union in the forum SUM180: Our story 7 years, 4 months ago
With the new year right around the corner (can you believe it?!) my hubby and I are preparing for our annual state of the FINANCIAL union. It might sound a little silly, but every year sometime in January we sit down to discuss our finances and how we did that year. Not only do we analyze our previous year’s spending, but we also take this…[Read more]

Kayla Buell – Ambassador replied to the topic Travel Costs in the forum My journey 7 years, 4 months ago
I’ve always been a little hesitant to buy trips on Groupon or Living Social, but they always look like they have good deals. A lot of my friends use Air BNB when they travel and I’ve been told it saves them so much money when traveling.

OMG what an awesome idea, lady! I agree 100% that that’s better than a gift you don’t really need. I always get so stressed out about money during the holidays and this year with a new baby arriving in 2 or 3 weeks, money is definitely tight. My mom to this day still insists on buying my hubby and I at least a few things, but I always struggle to…[Read more]

I think it’s all about establishing your priorities. Obviously the conferences are important to you, but could those $1500 in savings be better spent on something other than hotel stays? If the answer is yes, then heck yea I think you’re doing the right thing by trying to find ways to save money. But yea, I definitely agree that it’s hard to…[Read more]

Kayla Buell – Ambassador started the topic Saving Money On Groceries With Delivery Services in the forum Grow your savings 7 years, 4 months ago
We don’t even need to go to the grocery stores these days. Technology is amazing my friends! I recently started using a service called Shipt to deliver my groceries to my house, and it’s probably the best investment I’ve ever made ($99/year subscription fee). Here’s why.
Obviously, there’s the whole convenience thing. There are times when I just…[Read more]

Kayla Buell – Ambassador started the topic Having A No-Spend Weekend in the forum Grow your savings 7 years, 4 months ago
Is it bad that I sometimes want my husband to actually work on the weekends? Here’s the thing. It seems like when we’re both home on the weekend, we find something we suddenly need to go do or something we suddenly need to go buy that costs a lot of money. We can’t even go to Walgreens without spending over $100. LOL it’s crazy!
So the next…[Read more]

Kayla Buell – Ambassador replied to the topic Top Money Wasters in the forum My journey 7 years, 4 months ago
Yep, those little subscriptions kill us big time. And yea, my hubby and iTunes are way too friendly these days. It’s so easy to think like, “oh it’s only $3.99 or $5.99 to rent a movie.” But that $5.99 can quickly turn into $40-$50 a month if you’re not careful. I definitely make it a point to watch these expenses and if I don’t see any progress…[Read more]

Kayla Buell – Ambassador replied to the topic Give Back Fund in the forum My journey 7 years, 4 months ago
You know, I wish I had more money to donate myself, but things are a little tough these days with a little one on the way. I’ve found that donating my time and donating old clothes I no longer wear are still ways I can give back without it hurting my bank account so much. That being said, I hope to eventually be at a point where I can be as…[Read more]

Kayla Buell – Ambassador replied to the topic Ways to Teach Your Kids About Saving Money in the forum Grow your savings 7 years, 4 months ago
I love that you’re thinking about teaching your daughter about money! Although I didn’t have a bank account myself until I was in high school, I do remember my parents teaching me about saving up for really special purchases. We’d sit down and think about one toy that I really really wanted and then they’d tell me how much that toy cost. Once I…[Read more]

Kelby – I feel you! The hubby and I have been totally off our budget the last few months, but it’s because we’re preparing for our new baby that’ll be arriving this December. There have been so many crazy expenses we’ve been dealing with, but I keep on telling myself that most of these are one-time purchases. Once she gets here, sure, there will…[Read more]

Kayla Buell – Ambassador started the topic Is Black Friday/Cyber Monday Worth It? in the forum My journey 7 years, 4 months ago
Ok so here’s the deal. Every year I make it a point to do my Christmas shopping during Black Friday and Cyber Monday. But for some reason, I always end up feeling like I’ve overspent instead of having scored some awesome deals. I know there has to be some kind of psychology to this – maybe a classic case of FOMO (fear or missing out) in regards to…[Read more]

A year ago I left a company that I had been working for since I was 18. The company had a really great benefits program, and one of them was their focus on having their employees enroll in a 401k, or a 403b in this case since they’re considered a non-profit entity.
Anyway, long story short, when I left that job, I had roughly $55,000 in that…[Read more]

Kayla Buell – Ambassador started the topic Reducing The Costs Of Celebrations + Parties in the forum My journey 7 years, 5 months ago
With my first child arriving in December, there have been a lot of events recently that have been really expensive. We’re currently in the process of planning my baby shower, and in order to save a bit of money, we decided to host the party at my mom’s house. Most venues here in Miami, FL will charge almost $20/pp for lunch, so we thought we’d be…[Read more]

Kayla Buell – Ambassador started the topic Paying Off My Mortgage Seems Impossible in the forum My journey 7 years, 5 months ago
The hubby and I bought our house 2 years ago, and we’ve been paying our hefty mortgage ever since. It finally occurred to me to take a look at our actual loan statements and I was horrified when I saw how little progress we had made on our principal amount! I think in two years we’ve only paid off about $10,000 worth of our full loan amount,…[Read more]

Yes! My friend loves sorting through things at TJ Maxx and then resells the things she buys online. My brother does the same thing with the latest sneakers out on the market and it’s amazing to see how he’s able to make sometimes a $300-$500 profit with the click of a button. Best of luck! Definitely let us know how it goes!

Definitely a good idea to be cautious before making the jump, but if you can manage to put a good percentage of your income into an IRA or some kind of retirement account, then go for it! OMG yes! My biggest regret as of late is having purchased a brand new car a few years ago. I still have $12,000 left to pay on my loan and every day I’m like, “Why on earth did I need a $20k+ car?” I definitely practice the “hide my money so I don’t think I have it” mantra, creating small savings accounts that money is automatically transferred…[Read more]
