Stacey Daprile – Ambassador replied to the topic Does It Really Matter Where You Go To College? in the forum My journey 7 years, 4 months ago
Kayla, we now have four college graduates – two more to go! I can say that the school choices affected the experiences that they were afforded and in that way, the school choice made a difference. Now, I also think that students are offered amazing experiences at many, many colleges and universities. It is all about taking advantage of the…[Read more]

I love to travel and a huge chunk of our budget is spent on traveling. I will forgo lots of material things and stretch our grocery budget to the max, just to afford our trips. I really work hard to maximize our travel budget as best as I can.
Unfortunately, I always seem to spend more on our trips – once I am in the travel mode – than I had…[Read more]

Antoinette, money used to burn a hole right through my pockets every time I had cash! It is just something that over time I have had to learn to resist. The thought of paying myself first – and making a deposit to a savings account, is what has helped me.

Recently I was chatting with two of my friends about retirement. One friend is currently retired and the other, like me, is still working and has one child in high school and one in college. The conversation went something along these lines.
Retired friend, “It feels weird spending money each month and knowing that our accounts are now being d…[Read more]

Congratulations! I bet you now have baby names swirling through your head! We used both 529 accounts and UGMA accounts for my kids’ college savings. It was nice to have a balance, but the 529 seems to be the best way to go at this time. The best advice is to start early. The time really does fly by faster than you will ever realize.

I just received an email from my money manager (the one that oversees most of my retirement accounts) to set up our yearly check up. I love that they are always on top of this and contact me. We get together every August to review account allocation and past growth. We also talk a lot about the kids, my job and income, and any changes over the…[Read more]

I have never done this – for me, it would just be too much to manage. Although, I have been tempted many times to set up a Christmas account. If I were to set up a separate savings account it would be for the holidays.

I think if you can find the right property, a duplex is a great idea!~ I have a friend that did this and the rental half is really helping her with the ownership.

For us the conversations were hard – hard in the sense of coming to agreement and really putting into words what we both envision for our future. It has taken multiple conversations to get to this point. But every step seems to be valuable. While I think we set a rather large goal for us – it will definitely affect our lifestyle, it has given us…[Read more]

The Diderot Effect is a totally new concept to me in the sense that I have never heard this term before, but I am fascinated because I have fallen victim to this effect many times. The Diderot Effect is a social phenomenon that causes you to spend more money. Yep, it is the name of the situation where you buy one item, and then that purchase…[Read more]

Kayla, I feel that it is always important to have your emergency savings held sacred. At 0% interest the debt is not costing you anything, and if you are earning interest on the savings you are money ahead. If the debt is costing more than you can earn, then I’d say pay off the debt.

Our recent car purchase, where my husband and I were able to come to a compromise, got me thinking about writing a personal financial mission statement. I am a teacher and this last year my students ran a used book store as a vehicle to raise money for a local charity. (They raised over $1,700!) One of the first things we did as a class was to…[Read more]
