Stacey Daprile – Ambassador replied to the topic Does It Really Matter Where You Go To College? in the forum My journey 7 years, 10 months ago
Kayla, we now have four college graduates – two more to go! I can say that the school choices affected the experiences that they were afforded and in that way, the school choice made a difference. Now, I also think that students are offered amazing experiences at many, many colleges and universities. It is all about taking advantage of the…[Read more]

I love to travel and a huge chunk of our budget is spent on traveling. I will forgo lots of material things and stretch our grocery budget to the max, just to afford our trips. I really work hard to maximize our travel budget as best as I can.
Unfortunately, I always seem to spend more on our trips – once I am in the travel mode – than I had…[Read more]

Great tips! My car currently has 163,000 miles on it and I know that in about a year’s time I will be looking for a new one. I’m trying to really plan ahead for this one.

My bachelors was definitely a, “who would give me the most grants,” pick when it came to choosing. My Master’s was a, “what school will accept me without having to take the GRE or pay an application fee.” The Master’s degree was in state but VERY expensive and while I definitely like the feeling of going to a prestigious school I can’t tell you…[Read more]

Not only saving but saving and letting it sit there. That’s the hardest part. I don’t know if I’ll be on this earth another 40 years but $179 a month is definitely achievable…

Hi All,
I’m not buying a house but I have to move out to an apartment of my own. I moved back in with my mom about a little over a year ago and I had to really consolidate and throw things away. I’ve kept some major things like a dinning room table and my bedroom furniture but I don’t have any living room furniture or kitchen. I also have to…[Read more]

I don’t want to start a huge debate over here since I know this topic can be kind of controversial, but does it really matter where you go to college?
I have so many friends who opted for out-of-state schools for college and they’re now regretting their decision big-time, with tens of thousands of dollars in debt to repay.
I, on the other hand,…[Read more]

You go, lady! That’s awesome! I definitely hope to be able to retire early, although I still have a way to go. But given that I’m 26 and already saving a ton of money, I’m sure I”ll be in a much better position than most of my peers will be at that age. Just the thought of that makes me happy 🙂

Thanks so much, Stacey! I’ve never heard of a 529 account, so I’ll definitely have to look into that. We want to start as soon as possible, just trying to figure out the best place to do it 🙂

Kayla Buell – Ambassador replied to the topic Learning to Not Splurge in the forum My journey 7 years, 10 months ago
I think having a specific goal at the front of your mind at all times helps. Like, if I’m trying to save for a vacation, I’ll think “okay…do I go out to eat today, or do I put that money towards Disney?” That makes it a lot less easier to splurge on the non-essentials.

Antoinette, money used to burn a hole right through my pockets every time I had cash! It is just something that over time I have had to learn to resist. The thought of paying myself first – and making a deposit to a savings account, is what has helped me.

Kelby Green – Ambassador replied to the topic My Financial Plan Gives Me Confidence in the forum Save for retirement 7 years, 10 months ago
I agree with a financial plan giving you confidence, but in addition to that, it provides me with structure. Having a significant amount of student loan (and various other consumer) debt, a financial plan gives me the structure necessary to dig myself out of it and one day experience financial independence. I credit my plan with helping me tackle…[Read more]

You’re right, Antoinette! I always try to avoid those “Free for X days/months” sales pitches because I have too much going on in my day-to-day to remember when to cancel them.
And yeah, those DIY projects can definitely add up. I blame Pinterest, though. LOL! If they wouldn’t make everything look so easy it wouldn’t even be a thought.

I would actually take your documents and sit with other financial advisers to get their opinion on the plan you have. Depending on their suggestions I would take those comments, concerns or questions to your advisor.

Antoinette Minor – Ambassador replied to the topic How Saying No to "Free" Things is Freeing Up Our Income in the forum My journey 7 years, 10 months ago
I most certainly say no to free things when it comes to sales pitches. Its always tied to some form of package that you pay later or 30 days for free and then you end up paying when you forget to end the trial period. Its much less of a hassle. One in particular would have cost me $50 dollars had I not remembered to shut it off.
You know what…[Read more]

Every Friday or pay day I just feel the urge to splurge. Sometimes its not even a pay Friday.
