Thanks, Kayla! I started running the numbers on the last few things that I got for “free” and the amount spent is RIDICULOUS! Lesson learned, though. Even if it took me a while to catch on.

Congratulations! I bet you now have baby names swirling through your head! We used both 529 accounts and UGMA accounts for my kids’ college savings. It was nice to have a balance, but the 529 seems to be the best way to go at this time. The best advice is to start early. The time really does fly by faster than you will ever realize.

I’m currently 20 weeks pregnant with my first baby, and this past weekend we found out we’re having a girl! Very exciting! Now that the reality has officially sunk in, we’re starting to get her nursery set up and working on getting everything ready for her arrival. One of the things my husband and I have been chatting about lately is setting up a…[Read more]

What a great concept! I think it’s wonderful that you meet once a year to go over your finances, plans, and goals. A lot can happen in a year, and I think a lot of people forget that. A once a year checkup is definitely healthy. Best of luck!

Wow, what a great post, Kelby! I had never really stopped to think about that! It’s true – sometimes you’re trying to save a buck and it ends up costing you more than simply saying no to it in the first place. Thanks for the reminder! Needed it.

Like most people, I like free things. In fact, I was walking around my house a few days ago and (no exaggeration) about 70% of the furniture, decorations, and electronics were given to us at some point over the last few years. Now to be clear, we’re not a charity case, we’re just frugal. Some would say VERY frugal, but honestly, we just enjoy tak…[Read more]

I just received an email from my money manager (the one that oversees most of my retirement accounts) to set up our yearly check up. I love that they are always on top of this and contact me. We get together every August to review account allocation and past growth. We also talk a lot about the kids, my job and income, and any changes over the…[Read more]

I have never done this – for me, it would just be too much to manage. Although, I have been tempted many times to set up a Christmas account. If I were to set up a separate savings account it would be for the holidays.

I think if you can find the right property, a duplex is a great idea!~ I have a friend that did this and the rental half is really helping her with the ownership.

Does anyone else have multiple savings accounts? I’ve found that having accounts for different purposes has been the best way for me to keep track of the money I’m saving. Plus, it keeps me a whole lot more motivated. Right now, I have one savings account that’s a Christmas fund, another one that’s a travel fund, and another one that’s currently…[Read more]

Two years ago, I bought a brand new car, the car that I have now, but if I could do things over again, I would have bought a USED car. Not all used cars are terrible and falling apart. You can get a 2 or 3 year old car in very good condition with a decent amount of miles on it for a great price. I used to lease all my cars, but after a while, I…[Read more]

I think you should wait. 12 years is a while but I don’t think its enough time to be aggressive in your investment. I think anything other than the pension would bring a low return on investment.

Hi All,
One of my clients went through a boot camp program for homeownership and decided that she wanted to invest in property for income before buying a home for herself. I always thought it would be wise to purchase a home for yourself and then acquire other properties. Then I thought, is there a reason to this order and does it matter which…[Read more]

My hubby and I look at our finances often, but if I’m being honest, lately we’ve just been kind of lazy. We look at our checking account balance and since it’s been positive, we’ve assumed we’ve been doing okay. Just this week, though, I decided that I wanted to know EXACTLY where our money’s been going, and man, after taking a look at EVERY…[Read more]
