Yep, those little subscriptions kill us big time. And yea, my hubby and iTunes are way too friendly these days. It’s so easy to think like, “oh it’s only $3.99 or $5.99 to rent a movie.” But that $5.99 can quickly turn into $40-$50 a month if you’re not careful. I definitely make it a point to watch these expenses and if I don’t see any progress…[Read more]

You know, I wish I had more money to donate myself, but things are a little tough these days with a little one on the way. I’ve found that donating my time and donating old clothes I no longer wear are still ways I can give back without it hurting my bank account so much. That being said, I hope to eventually be at a point where I can be as…[Read more]

I love that you’re thinking about teaching your daughter about money! Although I didn’t have a bank account myself until I was in high school, I do remember my parents teaching me about saving up for really special purchases. We’d sit down and think about one toy that I really really wanted and then they’d tell me how much that toy cost. Once I…[Read more]

Last weekend, my oldest daughter turned four and received cash from both sides of grandparents. While it wasn’t a lot of money, I’m trying to think of ways to use it as an opportunity to begin introducing money and the concept of saving. I’ve considered taking her to the local bank and opening a minor savings account, but I don’t know how much…[Read more]

My strategy is to create a list of things I NEED or that I know I want to give as a gift. No browsing or picking up things just because they are on sale. It also helps because you can possibly avoid things that will be sold out. I needed a bed and was able to score a King Size bed for $300! Didn’t have to stand in line or go super early. I just…[Read more]

I can definitely relate to what you are going through. I had many big purchases and unexpected expenses with moving over the summer. I’m just now recovering. What helps is if you revisit your budget. You may be going overboard because you don’t have true numbers for your expenses or even just your allowance. See if that helps 🙂

Hi All,
Do any of you have a budget for how much you donate? I’m building out my plans to volunteer and give back in 2018 but I want to know what you think a reasonable budget is, especially with so many initiatives and Giving Tuesday coming up.
Thanks!

Kelby – I feel you! The hubby and I have been totally off our budget the last few months, but it’s because we’re preparing for our new baby that’ll be arriving this December. There have been so many crazy expenses we’ve been dealing with, but I keep on telling myself that most of these are one-time purchases. Once she gets here, sure, there will…[Read more]

Ok so here’s the deal. Every year I make it a point to do my Christmas shopping during Black Friday and Cyber Monday. But for some reason, I always end up feeling like I’ve overspent instead of having scored some awesome deals. I know there has to be some kind of psychology to this – maybe a classic case of FOMO (fear or missing out) in regards to…[Read more]

Since this is a ‘safe space’ I feel like I can be honest with you guys: My budgeting has been completely off for the past six or so months and I’m having a hard time getting things back on track. I’m not sure if it’s par for the self-employment course, since working for yourself means you no longer are paid at bi-weekly intervals…or maybe I’ve…[Read more]

I’m actually facing a similar dilemma, as I just ended my contract at a co-working space I had been using for a little over a year. It was a great space, with really creative and helpful people, but for me, the commute (30-45 mins each way) started to become too much. The cost at $250/mth was not a huge issue because I felt like I was getting a…[Read more]

Antoinette Minor – Ambassador replied to the topic Jumbo Mortgages? When are they the right type of Mortgage? in the forum Buy a house 7 years, 6 months ago
I think the best bet is to look at the overall fees and then to use a debt calculator to see how long it would take if you kept the loans separate or if you lumped them into a jumbo mortgage.

You hit my soft spot when you said iTunes… My pitfall is game purchases. I don’t play often but when I do I spend way too much money on purchasing extra “lifes.”
One thing that has kept me on budget with coffee is using the coffee shop app. My favorite is Dunkin. I preload it with my budget and that’s all I get. Plus they also have really good…[Read more]

My top money wasters include things like all too frequent trips to coffee shops, ordering that second round of food (that I don’t really need), and over the top purchases on iTunes late at night. Hey, I enjoy watching movies from the comfort of my couch a little too often.
But as I begin to work with a new accountant I realize how MUCH money I…[Read more]

I love, love, love to travel. It’s when I feel the most at home (oddly enough), and it helps me find my creativity all over again. But at the end of the day it’s also a stressor because of the costs associated it with it.
I frequent travel bargain sites like TravelZoo or Groupon and always keep an eye on airlines for sales, but at the end of the…[Read more]
