I’ve not used either of those, but I do love Acorns! It automatically rounds up purchases (like .94 to 1.00) and then puts that into a separate account for me. I’m the worst at having a saving’s account so this works amazingly well for me!

After looking over my expenses from August it’s clear to me that the little things, like picking up the tab for drinks or dinner with friends or even my morning coffee runs, are what add up SO quickly. But at the same time, in my field (lifestyle blogger) I have to be out and about doing things, otherwise I have nothing to post and/or talk about.…[Read more]

Woof, after several years in retail management in big box stores I could never imagine doing it again, but working part time for a small, local business for the holiday could be enjoyable!

Being self-employed I know the importance of a rainy day fun more than anyone, or I guess I should say that I SHOULD know about it more than anyone else. But I’ll be the first to admit that I have the hardest time saving money or putting money aside for those rainy days and/or slow months that may come my way.
For the rest of the year I’m doing…[Read more]

Hi All,
Holiday time is coming up and I’m thinking about getting another holiday job for the year. I enjoyed the extra income but part time retail work usually pays very little. I found that being on my feet for hours at the end of the day sometimes didn’t justify the pay but I also was able to pay a few things off/afford Christmas.
I’m thinking…[Read more]

Thank you! I decided to just stick with renting. You’re right, I’m not ready to buy and even if it may save money or become a great investment it would be a premature decision for me.

What worked for me was planning. I tried to spend all of my money before I get there. Meaning, if I know I want to try out the local restaurants I will go on groupon or other sites to see if I can pay upfront. Usually groupon is something like $15 for a $30 meal. I have my coupon or discount and I don’t have to worry about tapping my budget when I…[Read more]

I used ebates years ago but I wasn’t consistent and probably because it wasn’t mobile when it came out. I’m definitely going to try it out because you are so right. The small change does add up!

I’ve always been a fan of using credit cards. Not in an irresponsible way, but in a way that allows you to earn points for purchases you would be making anyway. I have one really great travel rewards card that I earn travel credit with, and that’s pretty much the card I use to pay for everything and then I pay it off at the end of the month. This…[Read more]

What an interesting concept! I’d never thought of that. Thank goodness I’m no longer in the dating scene, but even as a married couple, my hubby and I do try to stick to a date-night budget. We’ve got $150 to spend on one really nice date night a month or a couple less expensive options. But if we didn’t have that budget in place, going out would…[Read more]

Hi All,
So we have been talking about this topic at work for quite a bit. When I was on the dating scene I never thought of having a budget for dates but when I think about it dating can be a crazy expense. This may be particularly expensive for men who are typically the party who pays. Single or married, do you have a date night budget and how…[Read more]

I’ve actually never heard of Robinhood but I have used Acorns. I don’t think financial apps are for me. I’m more of a set and forget it type person instead of hands on with an app. I will definitely check out this app and try out the investment app world again.

I think it all depends on the return on investment. I would sit down with an expert from Vanguard or Fidelity. If you are a credit union member the guys at CUNA are pretty good too. I’ve worked with them to help me navigate my retirement funds. I hope that helps a bit.

I received my first check from Ebates this weekend for $59.04. Whoop whoop! Free monaaay. Well, not free, but still… money I wouldn’t have received without downloading the app.
I’m a big fan of these money-saving apps like Ebates, Checkout 51, and Ibotta because I figure that if I’m going to be spending the money anyway, I might as well get…[Read more]

I don’t have much insight, but I definitely feel your pain. I gave up my nice cushy corporate job with an employee match last year to move to a lower paying job in advertising at a small mom-and-pop shop. This year I haven’t been able to contribute to retirement since I took a $10k pay cut, but I’ll have to start working on a plan over the next…[Read more]

I love this! I think it makes so much sense to make yourself pay a “ME” bill first. Like you said, after that money’s been spent on paying yourself, you’ll adjust your lifestyle to make due with the spending money you have left. I’ve been doing this for years taking $50 out of each paycheck and sending it automatically to a tiny little checking…[Read more]

I’m 100% with you on that! And really, it’s one of the biggest arguments I have with my hubby. I would rather save up money to take a nice trip somewhere, where he’d rather spend on electronics and things like that. I love my home, but when I see how much STUFF I have around, it makes me sick. I don’t need anymore STUFF. Instead, I need to explore…[Read more]

The best financial advice that I ever received was to simply pay myself first. Simple advice, but not always so easy in reality. What makes this challenging is that it always seems that after the bills are paid – the rent/mortgage, groceries, utilities, transportation, debt payments – all the money is gone.
But I have seen that this is really…[Read more]

+1 for Dollar-cost averaging! No one can predict what the stock market is going to do and attempting to time it is an exercise in futility. Dollar-cost averaging removes emotion from the equation which is HUGE when it comes to long-term investing.

As a small-business owner, we’re afforded a ton of benefits — like the ability to work on whatever projects we want and the flexibility to work on them from anywhere. While on one hand having these types of options are great, self-employment has a fair share of drawbacks as well.
One of the biggest downsides that I’ve noticed since moving fro…[Read more]
