I haven’t tried it, but I love the concept. The frugal side of me is concerned that I won’t be able to use coupons and would end up spending more. On the other hand, the I-hate-grocery-shopping-with-a-passion side thinks you can’t put a price on the feeling of bliss felt by never having to step foot in a grocery store again. LOL!

You are absolutely right! I had not even considered teaching her about purchasing decisions…that’s huge! *feverishly adds that to my list of parenting lessons*

Tying the savings lesson to special purchases is a really good idea! I’ll definitely try that out. Thanks, Kayla!!

Last weekend, my oldest daughter turned four and received cash from both sides of grandparents. While it wasn’t a lot of money, I’m trying to think of ways to use it as an opportunity to begin introducing money and the concept of saving. I’ve considered taking her to the local bank and opening a minor savings account, but I don’t know how much…[Read more]

Since this is a ‘safe space’ I feel like I can be honest with you guys: My budgeting has been completely off for the past six or so months and I’m having a hard time getting things back on track. I’m not sure if it’s par for the self-employment course, since working for yourself means you no longer are paid at bi-weekly intervals…or maybe I’ve…[Read more]

Kelby Green – Ambassador replied to the topic Co-Working Spaces in the forum My journey 7 years, 1 month ago
I’m actually facing a similar dilemma, as I just ended my contract at a co-working space I had been using for a little over a year. It was a great space, with really creative and helpful people, but for me, the commute (30-45 mins each way) started to become too much. The cost at $250/mth was not a huge issue because I felt like I was getting a…[Read more]

I just watched a YouTube video around the concept of “If you can’t buy two of something, you shouldn’t buy one.” I know, I know…it’s not exactly mind-blowing, but I surely don’t give much thought as to whether I can afford more than one of something when casually swiping my card.
Maybe some of you can relate.
Since I’m always looking for e…[Read more]

Thanks, Carla! Those paddle boards sound like a huge win! And I’m with you on the paddle board yoga. I struggle with yoga on non-moving surfaces, so yoga on a paddle board would be completely out of the question. Haha!

Kelby Green – Ambassador replied to the topic Life Insurance Policies in the forum Build your investments 7 years, 2 months ago
I tend to think of life insurance and retirement planning as two completely separate things. I know that there are whole life plans which combine both, but I’m skeptical for a number of reasons.
First, the guarantees. Having worked in financial services and knowing how some of these products really work, I know that these ‘guarantees’ included…[Read more]

In my quest to find ways to eliminate debt, I stumbled across the concept of retail arbitrage. The idea is you purchase a product at a discount, and then resell it online (via eBay or Amazon) for a profit. Pretty simple, right.
Granted, I’m not expecting to strike it rich, but the possibility of earning a little extra income by buying low and s…[Read more]

Josh, I can relate to exactly what you’re saying. I made the same mistake about not diversifying my income when I started my business. Heck, two years in I still don’t think I’m diversified enough…but I’m working on it.
To answer your question, if I could give one piece of advice to my former self it would be to be patient. If I was to look…[Read more]

Kelby Green – Ambassador replied to the topic So Many Gifts To Buy And It's Not Even Christmas! in the forum My journey 7 years, 3 months ago
You are definitely not alone! A few years back, we realized that the end-of-year birthdays, holidays, etc. were big budget busters, so we added up what we planned to spend and made that a line item for the next year. Basically, we took the total and broke it down by month and just increased our monthly savings contribution by that much. That way…[Read more]

Lately, I’ve been reading a lot about Dave Ramsey and his approach to getting out of debt. I’ve checked out some of his books from the library, listened to his podcast, and even convinced a friend of mine to let me borrow their Financial Peace University home version so I could see what all the fuss was about. After consuming, what I believe to…[Read more]

A little over seven years ago, my wife and I bought the house that we currently live in. At the time, the purchase was driven by a few things. 1.) The character of the home (a ’70s ranch style with plenty of space), 2.) the cost (around $100k), and 3.) the close proximity to my in-laws (which is actually not as bad as it sounds). But here’s the…[Read more]

+1 for Dollar-cost averaging! No one can predict what the stock market is going to do and attempting to time it is an exercise in futility. Dollar-cost averaging removes emotion from the equation which is HUGE when it comes to long-term investing.

As a small-business owner, we’re afforded a ton of benefits — like the ability to work on whatever projects we want and the flexibility to work on them from anywhere. While on one hand having these types of options are great, self-employment has a fair share of drawbacks as well.
One of the biggest downsides that I’ve noticed since moving fro…[Read more]

I’m in the same boat — both self-employed and realizing that experiences are more valuable than possessions. Like Stacey mentioned above though, I’ve also come to understand that experiences don’t necessarily have to be expensive or involve a hotel or flight. In fact, my most recent experience was a weekend camping trip about an hour outside of…[Read more]
