OMG yes! My biggest regret as of late is having purchased a brand new car a few years ago. I still have $12,000 left to pay on my loan and every day I’m like, “Why on earth did I need a $20k+ car?” I definitely practice the “hide my money so I don’t think I have it” mantra, creating small savings accounts that money is automatically transferred…[Read more]

Hi Antoinette, you’re wise to consider this *before* making the move! The good news is that there are definitely great options for self-employed/small bizness owners when it comes to retirement. In my case, I have my own consulting practice and I set up a solo 401k. It works exactly the same as an employer plan – there are individual contributions…[Read more]

I just watched a YouTube video around the concept of “If you can’t buy two of something, you shouldn’t buy one.” I know, I know…it’s not exactly mind-blowing, but I surely don’t give much thought as to whether I can afford more than one of something when casually swiping my card.
Maybe some of you can relate.
Since I’m always looking for e…[Read more]

Thanks, Carla! Those paddle boards sound like a huge win! And I’m with you on the paddle board yoga. I struggle with yoga on non-moving surfaces, so yoga on a paddle board would be completely out of the question. Haha!

Hi All,
I go back and forth probably 5 times a month on whether or not I should take the leap into entrepreneurship. Every time I say no because I’m scared to lose the benefits my employer has. Retirement pack is one of them. Do any of you have suggestions or can give advice on what you would do to make sure you can retire if you’re and entrepreneur?

Thanks for your thoughts guys! I just wanted to check and make sure I wasn’t being sold a product on behalf of the presenter. I’ll continue my research and take your advice into consideration.

I think his idea of living without debt is doable but not for most. If most people waited to buy things in cash (house, car, school, etc.) they may literally be waiting so long that they can’t enjoy it or may never obtain it. Income is a huge factor and sometimes you need that debt in order to make more money (business loan, school loan, house – w…[Read more]

I’m looking into this too and what I decided to do was look at big expenses I can scale back. My first thought is my car. It’s due to be turned in and instead of getting another one I’m considering going without one for 6 months to a year. That would get me back on track. If that isn’t an option I would take a look at things you have on auto re…[Read more]

I’ll admit to being new to this concept, but I think once you figure out the ins/outs of the process it could definitely pay off. eBay to the rescue!

We’ve all done it at least once, at least I hope i’m not alone, in buying a car that’s a little outside our price range or getting an apartment that’s a little bigger than we actually need. Why? Because we think it’s what we need, but at the end of the day what we really need is stability. And living outside our means definitely does not provide…[Read more]

It’s a tale as old as time, and it’s as alive today as it ever has been. Keeping up with Joneses, especially in the social media age, is going nowhere fast. Working in the social media industry makes it even worse for me. Wanting to always have the latest iPhone, best camera, and go on the best, most exciting trips – all for the good content, of…[Read more]

I tend to think of life insurance and retirement planning as two completely separate things. I know that there are whole life plans which combine both, but I’m skeptical for a number of reasons.
First, the guarantees. Having worked in financial services and knowing how some of these products really work, I know that these ‘guarantees’ included…[Read more]

In my quest to find ways to eliminate debt, I stumbled across the concept of retail arbitrage. The idea is you purchase a product at a discount, and then resell it online (via eBay or Amazon) for a profit. Pretty simple, right.
Granted, I’m not expecting to strike it rich, but the possibility of earning a little extra income by buying low and s…[Read more]

Hi all,
I was at an event yesterday and learned a bit about life insurance policies. I’m still a bit on the fence about them but I wanted to know if any of you have one and are you using it as part of your track to retirement?

Income is my number one problem. I can save and save and save but I took a pay cut and it’s starting to hurt. So while looking for a new full time job I’ve gotten a holiday job, I manage social media for clients and I pick up income blogging. Anything to hustle and make sure I can live lol

I would tell my former self that 5 years from now the thing that I purchased really won’t mean anything in the future but debt. I also love that you mentioned diversifying your streams of income. That’s something I wish to do as well.

Kelby Green – Ambassador replied to the topic Diversification in the forum Grow your savings 7 years, 7 months ago
Josh, I can relate to exactly what you’re saying. I made the same mistake about not diversifying my income when I started my business. Heck, two years in I still don’t think I’m diversified enough…but I’m working on it.
To answer your question, if I could give one piece of advice to my former self it would be to be patient. If I was to look…[Read more]

Another great topic! A few thoughts come to mind:
1. Lisa, Kayla – have you guys looked at websites that connect creative freelancers with clients? Fiverr and 99Designs are a popular ones, but I know there are others. You sign up with the site to be a service provider; clients come to the website and choose from the provider list who they want to…[Read more]
