Is it wise to escrow your real estate taxes?

Right now we do not have our real estate taxes escrowed into our mortgage. When those bills arrive, it’s always quite painful! I am wondering if there is an advantage to NOT having them in an escrow? Do they tack interest onto that amount?

We have ours escrowed so we do not have the pain. It shows what portion goes to the escrow. The disadvantage would be you do not have use of the money and you do not receive interest on that money. To me it is worth not having that big bill twice per year. Also I never have to worry that something major happened and I might not be able to pay them.

I agree with Laura that the advantage to not having them in escrow is the ability to earn interest on them in the interim before they are paid out. This has not been much of an advantage in the low interest environment over the past several years.
