Found money

Yesterday my son was looking for his birth certificate. He had left a box of papers at my house, and found it in with old bank statements, etc. He also found a proxy vote form for a stock that he didn’t know he had. I remembered that a friend of ours had bought him a $100 worth of a stock when he was born. The account number was on the form, so he called the broker and learned that there was $3500 sitting in an account for him. This got me wondering, if there were other investiments, accounts, etc. that I didn’t know we had (particularly accounts from my dad who passed away a few years ago).

OK, I did search the couch cushions and jacket pockets, and found .53, but I also did a little research and thought I’d share some of the places to learn if you’ve got money that you had forgotten about or didn’t know you even had (like my son).

National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators – http://www.missingmoney.com/
Money that your state may have of yours (old bank accts, etc.) – http://www.unclaimed.org
    Savings Bonds – http://treasurydirect.gov/indiv/indiv.htm
    Pensions – http://search.pbgc.gov/mp/

I’m heading over to those to search a bit. Let me know if you find any money that you didn’t know you had.
